Heilmann Regional Park

Description : A true "diamond in the rough", this exquisite day-use park set in a classic California Blue Oak forest setting in the historic town of Atascadero, offers three regulation sized tennis courts, group picnic areas, and a recently-built disc golf course. Appreciated by locals for many years, Heilmann lies next to Chalk Mountain Golf Course, a traditional stop for golfers since the 1940's.

Montaña de Oro

Description : This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park's trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner's Cove, across from the campground. The park's name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites.

Complete with a 20,000 sq.ft. skate park, neatly manicured landscaping, tennis courts, a well-planned playground, and restrooms, this small, imaginatively designed park is a pleasant place for walking or picnicking, and is a good spot to let auto-bound children burn off excess energy.

Oceano Dunes

Description : This 3,600 acre off road area is among the most popular and unique of California State Parks. The 5 ½ miles of beach open for vehicle use and the 1,500 acres of sand dunes available for off highway motor vehicle recreation are attractions for visitors from throughout the United States. Oceano Dunes is the only California State Park where vehicles may be driven on the beach. Passenger cars can easily drive on the northern portion of the beach.

William Randolph Hearst Memorial

El Chorro Regional Park

Description : Once used extensively by local ranchers for dairy production and cattle grazing, this land was acquired by the Federal Government in the 1940’s to establish Camp San Luis Obispo. The camp was used for training purposes by the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. In 1972 the land was deeded to the County, during President Nixon’s “Legacy of Parks” program, to be managed as a natural park and recreational area for the citizens and visitors of San Luis Obispo County.

Santa Margarita Community Park

Description : Created by the construction of the Salinas Dam in 1941, Santa Margarita Lake was originally designed to furnish water to Camp San Luis Obispo. Today, swimming in the lake is not permitted as it is the drinking water reservoir for the City of San Luis Obispo. Beyond the developed area of the park, Santa Margarita Lake Natural Area represents several thousand acres of designated open space. This section of the park is managed for its natural resource values, passive recreational use, and environmental education opportunities.

Pismo State Beach

Rios Caledonia Adobe

Description : The Rios-Caledonia Adobe has an interesting and unique history. Built in 1835 by local Indians, it was initially part of the properties of Mission San Miguel de Archangel. Petronilo Rios supervised the construction of the two-story adobe covered with white plaster made from lime, river sand and animal hair. At the time, he was a corporal who commanded the artillery detachment of eight men from the San Francisco Military District to guard the mission and commander of artillery at the presidio in Monterey. The timbers for the fourteen-foot rafters were sawn from trees transported to the site from Cambria and tied together by leather straps.

Estero Bay

Description : Estero Bay is a long, narrow and very shallow body of water located in Southwest Florida. The estuary is bordered on the west by a chain of barrier islands, which include: Estero Island, Long Key, Lovers Key, Black Island, Big Hickory Island, and Little Hickory Island. These barrier islands separate the bay from the Gulf of Mexico. The principal freshwater inflows come from a number of small rivers and creeks including the Estero River, Spring Creek and the Imperial River.

San Simeon State Park

Description : San Simeon State Park is one of the oldest units of the California State Park System. The coastal bluffs and promontories of the scenic park offer unobstructed views of the ocean and rocky shore. The park includes the Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve, the San Simeon Natural Preserve and the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve which were established in 1990.

South County Historical Society

Morro Bay State Park

Description : Morro Bay State Park features lagoon and natural bay habitat. The bay's most prominent landmark is Morro Rock. On the bay's northeast edge is a pristine saltwater marsh that supports a thriving bird population.

Oceano Community Park

Description : Oceano Park and Campground was once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the Chumash Indians. Due to the somewhat harsh terrain, though, settlement of the area was mostly ignored until the 1900s. With the advent of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1890s came a real interest for the development of Oceano. Beach resorts and large subdivisions sprang up and then, unfortunately, fell to the woes of the Great Depression. In the wake of this difficult era, growth and development continued. The Oceano Memorial Park and Campground are a part of the many improvements made during the 1950s to help enhance the community of Oceano, as well as the County of San Luis Obispo.

Hearst Castle

Description : In 1865, George Hearst, a wealthy miner, purchased 40,000-acres of ranchland that included the Mexican Ranchos of Piedras Blancas, San Simeon and Santa Rosa. In 1919, his only son, William Randolph Hearst, inherited the land from his mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. By then the ranch had grown to encompass 250,000 acres. Originally known as “Camp Hill,” its wilderness offered a place for family members and friends to “rough it” on camping trips. Despite elaborate arrangements with separate sleeping and dining tents, Hearst envisioned more comfortable accommodations. His simple instructions to famed San Francisco architect Julia Morgan in 1919: “Miss Morgan, we are tired of camping out in the open at the ranch in San Simeon and I would like to build a little something”
